Chapter 15 - Kristina

The turnaround in Fedor’s demeanor left me reeling. I could only blink at his back as he stormed out of the galley, still breathless from his kiss. How did we go from him making out with me to him lashing out at me in the space of a couple of minutes?

Well, that was Fed, wasn’t it? Always reverting back to his true form. I had to stop letting my guard down, but it was so easy when he let his down. For a while there, up on deck before the false alarm, we’d been having a nice, easy conversation, like we really might have been friends once and could be friends again. And yes, I liked the way he looked at me. It was way too easy to fall for his charm when he decided to lay it on.

I was naturally an easygoing person and found it hard to hold a grudge, but I needed to learn, or I’d keep getting caught in his traps.

Right now, I wasn’t stewing on the pain of the past but simmering at his current treatment. It was much easier to be mad at Fed for acting like a jerk than it was to wish he’d come back and drag me into his arms again. As I slapped together some ham and cheese sandwiches for everyone, I wished I’d told him where to go with his bossy commands. Tolya was perfectly safe with both Evelina and Theresa, and I felt I was more useful up on deck since I kept up regular practice at the gun range in New York.

I carried up the tray of sandwiches, big bag of pretzels, and pitcher of lemonade, with a bright smile on my face, but the afternoon had turned sour for me. Everyone else had recovered from the non-emergency and even made jokes about it. Fedor joined in, but I could tell he was also forcing his relaxed demeanor.

Good, we could both be miserable, then. It served him right if he was suffering.

“Miss Kristina, when can I get back in the pool?” Tolya asked, squeezing a glob of sunscreen into his hand and smearing it up and down his arms.

I checked the timer I’d set on my phone after he finished his lunch and held it up to show him it was about to run down to zero. I gripped his shoulder before he could dive in and helped him reapply the sunblock. The kid was so fair; he was practically transparent, and I had learned in our short time together to be ruthless about it.

“Come in with me,” he pleaded.

Since both Evelina and Maks were napping below, and my father, Aleksei, and Fedor were deep in conversation, I splashed down the steps into the water. Theresa jogged in place in the deep end, with each of her boys bobbing next to her in their little life vests. She waved me over, and Tolya and the twins started a splash battle.
